Bridgepoint Education Announces Resignation of President and CEO of University of the Rockies
SAN DIEGO, CA (June 30, 2008) – Bridgepoint Education today announced the resignation of Dr. Emory G. Cowan, Jr., as President and CEO of University of the Rockies. Dr. James Ungvarsky, Chief Operating Officer at University of the Rockies, will serve as interim president. The university’s board of directors will immediately launch a national search for a new President.
“We are thankful for Dr. Cowan’s dedication and years of service to this university,” said Andrew Clark, CEO of Bridgepoint Education. “His contributions to University of the Rockies are greatly appreciated and we wish him well in all of his future endeavors.”
Dr. Cowan was born in Georgia in 1940. He attended Emory University, where he earned an MDiv degree in Theology and Pastoral Care. He also earned the EdM degree in education from Boston University and an MS in Guidance, Counseling, and Education from Long Island University. Dr. Cowan’s PhD in Psychology was earned from Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco. Dr. Cowan is a Viet Nam combat veteran who was awarded two Bronze Stars and an Air Medal for his service as a U. S. Army Chaplain. He retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Dr. Cowan served the Colorado Springs community for nine years as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Chapman College’s Colorado Springs Academic Center. In 1998, when the Chapman College Academic Center closed, Dr. Cowan led a group of faculty from that academic center to form the Colorado School of Professional Psychology, a graduate program then offering the only PsyD program between Denver, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Through his effort and guidance the School experienced nine years of steady growth and he led the process of its becoming University of the Rockies following COSPP's acquisition by Bridgepoint Education in 2007. Dr. Cowan is a past president of The Psychological Society of the Pikes Peak Region and was the 2004 recipient of the Psychological Society of the Pikes Peak Region’s Cornelia Sabine Award for outstanding contribution to the psychological community.
